Compress, Encrypt, Package, Backup with 1 utility

Over 500 million users worldwide make WinRAR the world's most popular compression tool today.

There is no better way to compress files for efficient and secure file transfer, faster e-mail transmission and well organized data storage.

RAR and WinRAR are Windows 10 (TM) compatible, available in over 50 languages in both 32bit and 64bit and several operating systems (OS) and the only compression software that is fully accepted in all countries using Unicode.

What's New in WinRAR 5.71?

  1. "Convert archives" command:

    1. improved performance when processing a lot of small archives in Windows 10;

    2. fixed memory leaks which could lead to excessive memory use when converting to ZIP format.

  2. Corrupt ZIP archive processing:

    1. "Repair" command replaces packed and unpacked file sizes stored in local file header with sizes from central directory if local header sizes look invalid;

    2. file extraction is stopped at unpacked size stored in ZIP headers even if available packed data allows further extraction. It is done to prevent unexpected hard drive space usage.

  3. Ctrl+C allows to abort RAR "l" command quickly.
    In previous versions it could take several seconds until list command stopped.

  4. Bugs fixed:

    1. WinRAR could crash when attempting to display some types of archive comments in GUI shell, resulting in a denial of service;

    2. if "Save archive name" and "Add to context menu" options were set in compression profile parameters and profile was invoked from Explorer context menu, WinRAR proposed an automatically generated archive name instead of name saved in profile.

    3. WinRAR displayed an unneeded pair of round brackets in "Archive" column of "Diagnostic messages" window for system error messages;

    4. "Extract to folder\" Windows Explorer context menu command could fail to unpack ZIP archives if their names included a numeric part followed by .zip extension, arbitrary data was present before the first file record and "Remove redundant folders from extraction path" WinRAR option was switched on;

    5. in "RAR x -x arcname" command, parent folders of files matching the specified mask also were excluded from extracting;

    6. "Find" command returned the current folder own name additionally to its contents for "Current folder" search area if folder name matched "File names to find" mask;

    7. if "Find in files" and "Find in archives" are both enabled, "Find" command did not match an archive name itself against "File names to find" mask after searching inside of archive. So it did not display archive names for masks like *.rar and applied this mask only to files inside of archives;

    8. when running an executable directly from archive, WinRAR 5.70 did not set a temporary folder with unpacked files as current. So executables attempting to access other archived files in current folder could fail to work;

    9. WinRAR could be inaccessilbe for few seconds after closing an archived file opened in internal viewer in Windows 10;

    10. dragging a file to subfolder of ZIP archive with "Store full paths" option enabled produced invalid pathnames consisting of repeated subfolder name. Same invalid pathnames were produced if adding files to ZIP archive with -ap -ep2 switches.

What's New in WinRAR 5.70?

The new release focuses on usability enhancements as well as on the removal of ACE support, which was necessary due to a potential security risk arising through corrupted ACE archives.

WinRAR has always been known for its wide support of all popular compression formats.
A recent report by Check Point Software revealed a potential security vulnerability in the UNACEV2.DLL library, which was used in former versions of WinRAR to decompress ACE archives.
There haven't been any reported attacks so far, but to provide WinRAR users with a stable and clean version, the final version of WinRAR 5.70 has been released.
Since UNACEV2.DLL had not been updated since 2005 and access to its source code is not available, the decision was made to drop ACE archive support starting with WinRAR 5.70. Now, after the launch of the final and stable version of WinRAR 5.70, upgrading immediately to the new 5.70 version is highly recommended.
To users who are not interested in an upgrade or who don't find a localized version of WinRAR 5.70 yet, our advice is to delete the UNACEV2.DLL file from their current WinRAR version to be reliably protected again. All users of WinRAR 5.10 or any newer version can find the UNACEV2.DLL file in the WinRAR program folder. WinRAR users of versions older than 5.10, can find the UNACEV2.DLL file in the Formats subfolder of the WinRAR program.

Working with the different file time stamps of Windows

WinRAR users now have the option of working with the different file time stamps that Windows offers. It is possible to choose file times based on modification, creation or last access when compressing data with the "Files to process" option on the "Time" page of the archiving dialog. This can be extremely useful especially when creating back-ups with WinRAR. In addition, WinRAR file list can now display the creation time and last access file times if they are available, providing more information to the user.

Usability Enhancements

Feature requests are regularly received from users and customers, and are implemented in the upcoming versions whenever possible. Now, the user can modify the behavior of the option, "Put each file to separate archive" of the "Files" page by the two new options "Double extensions for archives" and "Archives in Subfolders.” This way, back-up options are further enhanced and the user can sort the data based upon their requirements.

The new "Files list/Files/Exact sizes" option allows the user to see the file size displayed in bytes when it is turned on. If it is turned off, the sizes are rounded up and shown in KB or MB.
In addition the "File list/List Style/Checkboxes" option allows the use of checkboxes to select file list items and is further improving usability of the software.

All enhancements and improvements mentioned above are also available in the command line version of WinRAR.

What's New in WinRAR 5.61?

...some bug fixes and minor changes.

What's New in WinRAR 5.60?

The final version of WinRAR 5.60 comes with a fresh look and several enhancements in usability!

New WinRAR Design

After putting it to the vote, the WinRAR users have decided on a new icon and toolbar design! It is a pleasure to announce that the user's favorite idea has been created by Aditya Nugraha Putra, from, and will be used in version 5.60 as WinRAR's default icon motif. Gratitudes go to all of the designers from and who participated in the challenge to create the new icon and toolbar designs, and the WinRAR users who helped make the final decision about which design set will be represented in the new version.

The look of the info dialog has also been modernized. The compression ratio graph has been refreshed, and "Names and Data" is now displayed in the "Encryption" field for archives with encrypted file names.

Usability Enhancements

The "Repair" command efficiency has been improved for recovery record protected RAR5 archives. It can detect deletions and insertions of unlimited size as well as shuffled data, including data taken from several recovery record protected archives and merge them into a single file in arbitrary order.

The usability of the decompression password dialogue has also seen some improvements. Now, if a wrong password for password protected RAR files with encrypted file names is inserted, WinRAR will propose a valid password instead of simply aborting the extraction process. This feature was already successful in previous versions for encrypted file data, but it has now been added for encrypted file names too. This option is also available for unpacking encrypted files in ZIP archives.

Furthermore, the full archive name is now displayed when the mouse is placed over an archive in the operation progress window. This is useful for users who handle archives with lengthy archive names that do not fit into the available window space.

The new version now recognizes different encodings like ANSI (Windows), OEM (DOS), UTF-8 and UTF-16 and is able to display them correctly in comment files.

What's New in WinRAR 5.50?

In the new version additional features - especially for the password manager - and usability improvements have been added.

RAR5 Default Archive format

When users archive or share files, they will benefit from an outstanding compression ratio along with a fast compression rate to save you space and bandwidth. From version 5.50 on WinRAR and command line RAR use RAR 5.0 archive format by default. The user can change it to RAR 4.x compatible format with "RAR4" option in archiving dialog or -ma4 command line switch. This change affects only new, clean installs. If RAR format has been saved in the default compression profile in previous versions, WinRAR respects these stored settings.

Password Manager Improvements

In passwords we trust. And with WinRAR’s 256-bit password protection the user won’t be having any trust issues. In the latest release the password dialog has been updated, and from now on there is the possibility to use a master password. The "Set master password" button in "Organize passwords" dialog can be used to encrypt saved password records and protect them from unauthorized access. If the entered password does not match the master password, it is treated as a usual password for archive operations. To permanently save the master password WinRAR has to be closed.
The latest version uses a new data format for the password organizer, so passwords stored in the "Organize passwords" dialog are not readable by older versions. It does not affect archive encryption formats and encrypted archives are compatible with previous WinRAR versions. Organizer data is converted to a new format only when users save it, but not immediately after installing WinRAR.
In addition the usability of decompression dialog of password protected archives has been improved. If a wrong password has been entered when unpacking an encrypted RAR5 archive, WinRAR now proposes to enter a valid password for the same file instead of aborting extraction.

Encryption Improvements

The security of other compression file formats has also been improved further. From version 5.50 on WinRAR uses AES-256 by default in CTR mode to encrypt ZIP archives as it is significantly more secure than the ZIP 2.0 legacy encryption algorithm. An extraction support was added for .LZ archives created by Lzip compressor and LZ and ZIPX have also been added to the list of associations in Settings/Integration dialog.

What's New in WinRAR 5.40?

The latest version brings enhancements of usability and compatibility as well as many technical improvements.

- The "Name encoding" submenu in "Options" menu allows to select encoding for archived file names.
This selection affects archive browsing and extraction commands. You can use the Ctrl+E shortcut to access this menu quickly.
It can be useful when unpacking an archive without Unicode file names, for example, unpacking a zip file with Chinese archived names in Windows, with Russian specified as a language for non-Unicode programs.

- Usability Enhancements
You can now drag folders from the folder tree panel and drop them to other programs or Desktop to copy or unpack them.
You can also drag the archive icon in the tree panel root to unpack the entire archive.

- SFX Feature
The maximum comment length for RAR archives has been increased from 64 to 256 KB. Since SFX script commands are stored in archive comment, it now allows a longer main and license text in an SFX archive.

- Recovery Record
If an archive has a Recovery Record, it can be repaired even after having been damaged due to a defect on a disc or other data loss. The ZIP format does not support Recovery Records.
Now, with WinRAR 5.40, Recovery Records (.rev files) are in the same folder as usual RAR volumes and archive test command verifies .rev contents after completing the test .rar files.

- Synchronization Feature
Previously "Synchronize archive contents" update mode (-as command line switch) aborted if some of the archiving folders could not be read. Now WinRAR continues performing the operation and preserves archived files matching unreadable folders.

Furthermore, WinRAR 5.31 x 64 was not able to "compress and email" with Outlook x64. This has been fixed.

Due to security issues in the past, WinRAR 5.40 requires a minimum of Windows XP SP3, thus WinRAR will not run on XP without service packs.

What's New in WinRAR 5.30 / 5.31?

The classic compression program stays on course with high compatibility, support of new multipart formats and offers many other functions for security and ease-of-use.

WinRAR 5.31 is a small service update and corrects a few issues in Windows high DPI mode.
Some bugs were fixed.

Enhanced extraction support for multipart archives
WinRAR 5.30 now supports the extraction of files that have been split into multiple parts with the extensions .001, .002, ... . It combines all parts and saves them to the extracted file if all files are stored in the same folder. Furthermore, WinRAR is now also able to extract multipart ZIP archives created with 7-Zip. In order to unpack or browse in such archives the user needs to open .zip.001 in the WinRAR shell. Again, all parts must be stored in the same folder before starting extraction. These improvements will help to handle huge amounts of data from different sources and in different formats.

Enhanced Usability
The latest version provides enhancements of usability for the graphical user interface and command line modus of WinRAR. Thus, for example in WinRAR file list the user can navigate in recently visited folders with the mouse 'Back' and 'Forward' buttons or Alt+Left and Alt+Right keyboard shortcuts. Also, for command line mode there are some new commands available which will simplify the WinRAR usage in this mode. Furthermore, WinRAR prevents a computer to go to sleep by inactivity timeout until the current operation, such as archiving, extraction or any other archive processing, is done. This is extremely useful for time consuming tasks such as creating backups with WinRAR or extracting huge files. In previous versions it was already possible to pause every compression or decompression operation. Now this functionality is also available for SFX archives. The 'Extract' button is changed to 'Pause' once the extraction has been started. This is needed if the user’s system is overloaded with tasks or if the user manually wants to interrupt the extraction process of an SFX archive.

What's New in WinRAR 5.20?

Enhanced Usability

A completely new feature allows using the winrar.ini file instead of the registry to store WinRAR settings. This will be extremely helpful if users want to install WinRAR to removable media, such as a USB flash drive in order to run it on different computers. Detailed information can be found within the WinRAR help section at "Configuration settings"/ "winrar.ini file".

Furthermore, the "Open with WinRAR" command is now available within Windows context menus for all archive formats supported by WinRAR. It can be turned off with the "Open with WinRAR (for usual archives)" option in the WinRAR "Settings/Integration/Context menu items..." dialogue.

The latest version of WinRAR 5.20 offers the possibility to drag files within Explorer with your right mouse button, drop them to a folder and select WinRAR archiving commands inside context menu to create an archive with these files in the destination folders. This feature helps users to compress and secure files.

WinRAR has been better adapted for Windows User Account Control (UAC). If Windows User Account Control prevents extracting or archiving commands to create files in system protected folders, WinRAR attempts to start another copy with administrator privileges to complete the operation.

Enhanced Compatibility

In addition to the RAR-format, WinRAR also supports many other archiving formats, giving the user the utmost flexibility to work with different formats. XZ compression algorithm has been added to extraction support of ZIP and ZIPX archives to ensure enhanced compatibility.

What's New in WinRAR 5.10?

Improved extraction support

We are pleased to announce that we have added now - as many of our users have requested such feature - the extraction support for ZIP and ZIPX archives using BZIP2, LZMA and PPMd compression. Furthermore also extraction support for 7z split archives has been included to be as user-friendly as possible and to provide a wide coverage of the most important archiving formats.

Performance improvements

With WinRAR 5.10 support for AES-NI CPU instructions has been added. Thus improvements of RAR encryption and decryption performance can be realized while using the software.

User interface

Keeping the general WinRAR appearance gives the user the familiarity they have come to expect over the last two decades. With version 5.10 images of default theme icons are scaled up with better quality in high DPI display mode. "What's going on behind the scenes has changed substantially since the first days of Windows and we have always thought the inner values are more important than a flashy user interface changing with each new version available. While people used to tell us constantly that we should change the GUI since we started, today we get compliments for not having done so. It is very rewarding to see that WinRAR and RAR compression have become a standard within the industry in many ways" says Burak Canboy, CEO of win.rar GmbH.

WinRAR 5.0 is here and ready to download!

The latest WinRAR release features a new and advanced archive format which makes archiving more secure, more efficient and faster than ever before.

Berlin, 03.09.2013 – win.rar GmbH and RARLAB are pleased to announce the long-awaited final release of WinRAR 5.0. The world’s leading compression software is now even more advanced and has implemented a variety of innovations further boosting the performance of WinRAR.
The new RAR5 archive format includes many improvements of existing features of WinRAR and creates RAR5 files with a higher compression ratio and significant speed gain relative to the competition.

There is a new archive format. When using WinRAR 5.0, you'll not only have the existing RAR and ZIP compression options but also the new RAR5 archive format. An assortment of advanced algorithms has been implemented in addition to further optimization for use with modern software and hardware configurations.
In summary, there is no better option for file compression than RAR5.

“It's never been more important to feel confident your sensitive data is safe from unwanted access and tampering,” says Öncül Kaya, managing director of win.rar GmbH.

WinRAR has always set the standard for quick and easy encryption and that's not going to seize anytime soon. With WinRAR 5.0, the RAR algorithm has been upgraded to include 256-bit AES encryption - further ensuring that the user's data is fully protected. With RAR encryption, data is safe and sound.

RAR archives have always provided a higher compression ratio than the competition. WinRAR 5.0 can now create larger dictionaries of up to 1 GB in the 64-bit version of WinRAR which leads to an even higher compression ratio than in previous versions.

Decompression speed has also been increased due to the introduction of a number of advanced algorithms optimizing the process. The increased of speed derives primarily from the use of multithreaded decompression on multi-core systems.

Further Additions to WinRAR 5.0

Based on the demand of many users the limitation of maximum archived file path length in RAR archive is changed from 260 to 2048 characters.

Another major improvement is the new recovery record function which is based upon the Reed-Solomon error correction codes making archive recovery stronger and more efficient. In test scenarios with a 1 GB archive, WinRAR was able to fix 9 times more damages relative to the previous version.

The file identification within RAR archives has been additionally enhanced by using BLAKE2sp hash as a file checksum. With BLAKE2 inclusion, one may definitively detect whether files are different or the same. While using CRC32, two different files may share the same value. This is not the case with BLAKE2.

More information on the improvements of WinRAR 5.0 can be found here:

Another tip: for all Windows-64-bit users, it is highly recommended to install the WinRAR 64-bit version. It is faster and offers the best available integration. WinRAR’s compression speed in Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 and on any multi-core-system has been increased considerably.

WinRAR is available in more than 40 different languages and is compatible with Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7 and Windows 8. The command line version of WinRAR is also available for Linux, FreeBSD and MAC OS X.
